God is BIGGER Than… Social Networking
Nothing makes me feel more like a dinosaur these days than someone telling me ‘You should twitter.” Twitter? Doesn’t that sound like something you should have your doctor look at? Then I’m told if I really want to reach people, “You should go viral.” At this point I’m thinking I shouldn’t wait for an appointment but head straight to the ER! Or maybe this dinosaur needs to -dare I say it?- submit and jump into the land of social networking.
I want to reach out to people but sitting by myself with a keyboard and a monitor sounds like the most unsocial, unnetworking thing on the planet. But I learned a long time ago that sharing my thoughts about hope, passion, healing and Christ is not enough. I need to say things that people need to hear in a way that they can hear it. But it’s hard. What I really want is for people to hear me the way I am comfortable sharing. I remember the bliss of my youth when I believed if people can’t understand me just the way I am, tough! Of course, those arrogant ways required a lot less effort on my part. Now I know reaching people in a place they can hear me requires me stepping out of my comfort zone. YUCK!
The truth is when I began doing therapy, giving speeches and writing books, I was completely out of my comfort zone. So why should social networking be different? No question that me diving into social networking is God using the MOST unlikely person to do the MOST unlikely thing. (Another sign that God has a sense of humor.)
So as I sit here at this silly keyboard, I’ve decided to chew up a Pepcid AC Complete, dial up Facebook, Linked In or something along those lines then click on the help button as many times as necessary to drag myself into the land of social networking. My favorite verse these days is from Joshua 1: “Be strong and courageous!” Here I go!!!
