DEVOTION OF THE WEEK: God is Bigger Than…Your Favorite Frying Pan

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

I’ve this great little frying pan that makes the best fried eggs.  They cook even and they flip easy because the pan is coated.  I also like making omelets or any kind of sauce or gray in this pan.  But it’s not a good pan for bacon because the strips are too long.   And there’s something about it’s special coating that makes it lousy for browning meat.  It’s still my favorite frying pan but it’s not made to do everything.

If I saw a pan that said it was “all purpose”, I’d get a little suspicious.  Maybe the pan has been designed to be good at most things but wouldn’t it be better to have a pan that excels at just the thing you want to cook?  I’d rather have one pan that’s great at frying eggs, another specifically for browning meat and of course, you need a good pan just for cooking stir-fry.

God designed people a lot like I would design frying pans.  God didn’t make ANY “all purpose” people.  God made each of us with a specific purpose in mind.   It’s not a mistakes that you are good at some things and lousy at others.  When God sat down and decided to create the perfect you, He made you EXACTLY the way you are suppose to be: complete with strengths and weaknesses.  I Corinthians 12:18 explains God’s intention for each part of the body of Christ.  Listen to what it says: “… in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.”  You really are made exactly the way God intended.

Problems comes when you think you are made to do all things instead of the specific things God designed you to do.  If you’re like me, the temptation to take on more than I should usually comes from my own good intentions like:

“It won’t get done if I don’t do it.”

“No one else came forward and it needs to be done.”

AND of course the famous reason for taking on too much…

“I just couldn’t say no.”

Next thing you know you are way over your head and nothing is getting done well.  It’s like being an egg pan but someone slapped a 4 pound roast in you to cook.  I suppose eventually, the roast would get cooked but would anyone want to eat it?  Not to mention the dents and scrapes the pan endured because an egg pan was not designed to cook pot roasts.  The hard thing to remember is that God designed the perfect pot roast pan and it’s not you!  You are a lousy pot roast pan.  But you are the PERFECT egg pan!

Trust me on this.  I speak from experience.  Go and make the most magnificent eggs the kingdom of God has ever seen and leave the pot roast to the other pan that’s designed entirely different from you.  Take the time to acknowledge both your strengths and your weaknesses that were given to you by God.  Then seize your strengths and focus on the things God has designed you to do.  You’ll be glad you did.

Do you ever get frustrated trying to figure out what God has designed for you to do?  What advice would you give someone trying to find their strengths?  What advice would you give to someone having problems saying “no?”  Love to hear your comments…

Quote of the Week: Contrary to Popular Belief by Stephen Hower

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

“Christians hold one another accountable, but move without judgement among those who do not know the Lord or accept His ways.  Lights are meant to be hung in dark places.  If Christians are to be lights of faithfulness, shining like a city upon a hill, they can not retreat from the darkness.  If forced to answer the challenge, “Either stay in or stay out.  Make up your mind!”  Christians would have to say “I’ll stay in and out.  I choose to stay in the faith but live out in the world.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

” God makes us in His image… Somewhere in you is the you whom you were made to be…The problem is that the image of God  is deeply scarred in each of us and we lose trust in God’s version of our story… It seems too good to be true…But the thing we are searching for is not somewhere else.  It’s right here.  And it’s only here when we give up the search, when we surrender, when we trust.  Trust that God is already putting us back together. .. It is trusting that I am loved…  That exactly as I am, I am totally accepted, forgiven, and there is nothing I can do to loose that acceptance.”

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

David Crowder’s song Oh Praise Him is one of those worship songs that seem to make me sing praises whether I want to or not!  Which is exactly what the song is about.  Praises for Christ are- as the song says- constant  and divine.  The angels are singing all day everyday.  Why not join in?

Even if you’re not into the music, you should check out this video.  Imagine walking through New York City trying to blend in until the praises for Christ BURST out of you!!   Makes me smile…

BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK: The Wonder Worker by Susan Howatch

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The Wonder Worker is a story about a gifted man that hungers to serve the Lord with His gift but goes astray.  It’s so human and so real.  It takes an honest look at the clergy and their need for redemption like everybody else.  An honest love story and a subtle mystery filled with good doses of psycho-babble for nerdy therapist like me.  The first in a series of three where the need for redemption becomes more and more profound.  I love redemtion stories!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The Shack by William P. Young

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

(The Holy Spirit is speaking.)  “You must give up your right to decide what is good and evil on your own terms.  That is a hard pill to swallow; choosing only to live in me.  To do that you must know me enough to trust me and learn to rest in my inherent goodness.”
