SONG OF THE WEEK: God Gave Me You by Dave Barnes

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

I love songs that combine godly love with romantic love.  I need reminders about the treasure my husband is in my life.  I didn’t do anything to deserve to be loved by him, he’s a gift from God.  But on days filled with the chaos we call life, that’s easy to forget.  Dave Barnes’ song God Gave Me You beautifully expresses the blessing God has given when you have a loved one in your life.

On my own I’m only
Half of what I could be
I can’t do without you
We are stitched together
And what love has tethered
I pray we never undo

Let’s face it.  Only God can make two become one.  Everything in us wants to be independent and seperate.  That calling in us to join together through the tough times comes from God.  What a relief!

DEVOTION OF THE WEEK: God is Bigger Than…Tinted Windows

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Do you remember when tinted car windows were the big thing?  Some cars had that purpley tint that bubbled up after a few weeks while other cars had windows as dark as night.  Today, tinted windows are standard features.  Why? Because when you are driving, too much light is not a good thing.

Tinting may be good for cars but not for people’s lives.   People need more light in their lives, not less.  When the light of Christ is shining brightly in a life, it reveals with clarity how God loves you, guides you and is at work in the world around you.  Most Christians can think of a time in their life when the light of Christ was shining so brightly it seemed to touch everything.  During the birth of a child, a special mission trip, or a moment of great accomplishment your whole life can explode with the light of Christ.  Other times, Christ’s light is a gentle glow reassuring you and lighting your path.

If Christ’s light is so great, how do our lives become tinted?  The first layer of tinting may come from frustrations or disappointments which shift your focus off Christ and onto your struggles.  This can easily lead to focusing on your self.  From this new layer of tint, you become a little less concerned about other’s needs and more concerned about your need to be taken care of or get things done.  With time, your self-centeredness feels comfortable so the things that bring the light of Christ into your world begin to feel uncomfortable.  Maybe you begin to sleep late on Sundays and you can’t find your Bible. Your friends might shift from people who encourage you towards Christ light to those that subtly pull you away.   After a while, you might find yourself with so much tinting you find yourself sitting in the dark.

The great news is that no matter how much tinting a believer allows in their life, they will always have the light of Christ.  John 8: 12 say  When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  But how can that be?  After letting in so much darkness into a life, how can the light of Christ make it in?

Jesus explains where believers can find His light in their darkness.  Matthew 5:14 says You are the light of the world. “  That’s right.  Christ’s light is in you.  Jesus brought His light into the world but now His light shines through you, whether you want it to or not.

So if you find yourself in a dark car with all the windows tinted black, fear not.  Your faith, which is the light of Christ, is still with in you.  The tint can’t keep the seeds of faith planted within you from shining.  Look away from the dark tinted widows and look to the glimmer of light Christ planted within you.  Focus on the light, and one day at a time and watch your light shine.

BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK: Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Jim Cymbala’s passion for the power of prayer is for me the over whelming message of Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire.  As Pastor of Brooklyn Tabernacle , Cymbala built a massive ministry from a deprived and struggling community.  But rather than giving the reader organizational techniques, promotion ideas and tips on using technology to spruce up a church, Cymbala tells a story about the oldest technique for building a ministry: prayer.

I have never been part of a congregation which had a regular prayer meeting so to hear Cymbala talk about beginning a prayer meeting in desperation completely enthralls me.  Through not only their small handful of believers faith in the Lord but also their faith in prayer, you begin to see the miracles in the hearts of broken people.

Let this book challenge you to examine not only the role of prayer in your church but prayer in your life. Do you really believe God can do great and mighty things through your prayers?  If so, do you pray for great and mighty things?  This is an amazing story written filled with the passion Cymbala has for the power of prayer.

SONG OF THE WEEK: Hope Now by Addison Road

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

When folks get into conversations about what makes faith in Jesus different than other faiths, I come back to hope.  For me it seems that people without Jesus are placing their hope in their abilities, their goodness, their loved ones or just in themselves.

All of those things have failed me at some time in my life.  I’m glad I have a rock to place my faith in…Jesus Christ.  This song Hope Now by Addison Road touches my heart in a very raw and honest way.  Here’s what is says about hope:

Everything rides on hope now
Everything rides on faith somehow
When the world has broken me down
Your love sets me free

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

“The Church is the real presence of Christ.  Once we have realised this truth we are well on the way to recovering an aspect of the church’s being which has been sadly neglected in the past.”
