BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK: Flabbergasted by Ray Blackston

Friday, June 25th, 2010

If you are looking for a great, fun, kickback and enjoy yourself summer book, Flabbergasted is it.  It’s about a bunch of singles in South Carolina trying to figure out the dating scene.  Characters are hilarious and the antics might remind your of your single and looking days, whether they were last week or last decade.  It’s the first in the series and they all three kept me laughing.

SONG OF THE WEEK: Beautiful, Beautiful by Francesca Battistelli

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

I love Francesca Ballestelli’s voice and the emotions she places in her songs.  But this song says what i want so much to keep front and center in my mind, even in the storms:

Like sunlight burning at midnight
Making my life something so
Beautiful, beautiful
Mercy reaching to save me
All that I need
You are so
Beautiful, beautiful
Enjoy the video..

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Too Busy Not to Pray by Bill Hybels

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

“Some people seem to think that God creates a person with certain gifts and then expects the person to excel in totally unrelated fields…I ask these people, ‘Why do you assume God’s leadings would contradict who He made you to be?’  Our God is purposeful.”

DEVOTION OF THE WEEK: God is Bigger Than…Your To-do List

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Most days I have a to-do-list.  This is typically a good thing because the list helps me to stay focused.  The problem comes when my list of things to do is so long it’s impossible to accomplish in one day.  That’s when it’s time to prioritize.  Do the cats get food or does my husband get clean shirts?  I have to choose what absolutely has to be completed today and what can wait.  Sometimes prioritizing can be as stressful as trying to complete the list.  If I knew exactly what was the best thing to do, I would do it.  But more often than not, I randomly go through my day checking off what looks good at the time.

If God had a to do list, I wonder what would be on it?  The Bible gives us some ideas.  It says He knows the number of hairs on your head and the exact time a sparrow falls.  Keeping track of all that must be an accounting nightmare.  And of course God’s busy being our Rock and our Fortress, and not to mention our Shield.  The good news is that with everything He has going on, God does not have a problem figuring out His priorities.  The number one most important thing on God’s to-do-list is salvation.

This is probably not a surprise to you.  After all, salvation of the world is the whole reason God sent us His Son to die for us.  Of course God has lots of things that are important to Him.  God hungers for justice, and healing and protection for you and all those you love.  The heartache comes when your top priority is different than God’s.

I mean lets face it.  When you are sitting in a hospital waiting room, you’re glad that God is about salvation but at that minute you wish His top priority was healing.  When the police are in your home or the pink slip comes from your boss some protection and justice from God would be nice right about then.  And God wants to grant you all the healing, justice and protection you need- IF it does not get in the way of His plan for salvation.

Seeing the sickness, violence, and injustice around you, can tempted you to think God is not in control.  But He is friend…He really is.  God’s abundant love for His children makes Him hunger for their salvation but God hungers for justice, safety and wholeness too.  He hurts when you hurt, grieves when you grieve and angers when evil touches your life.  But listen.  The day will come when He will make all things right.  Revelations 21:4 says when Jesus returns, He will “wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

One day, God’s list of things to do will be completed.  You will gaze upon the precious face of Jesus and He will have made all things right.  All the injustice, sickness and pain will have been wiped from the earth as God gathers all His beloved children into His loving arms.  Fear not friend.  He will indeed make all things new.

It’s Here! God is Bigger Than Your Cancer Workbook! God’s Been Busy!

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

I have to tell you the story of how this book came into existence.  I was not planning to write this book and by the time I realized I was writing a book, the rough draft was halfway done.

It began when a local church asked me to lead a six week cancer support program with a focus on cancer topics.  After picking the six topics-faith, healing, prayer, stress reduction, relationships and healthy living- I went to work writing scripture based outlines and handouts to use in the group.  Around week three, I received an email from a cancer group leader in Ohio asking if I knew of a Bible study for cancer patients.  I regretfully told her “No.”  Then less than a week later, another email comes form a leader in Michigan, asking the same question!  As I sat there and thought about it, I realized that the handouts for my cancer support group was a Bible study for cancer patients, survivors and their love ones.  A week later, I received another request from New York.

God had His megaphone in my ear “Karen!! Take the group handouts and write a book!”   Each of these leaders were strangers which God used to rattle my brain to see the need for Christian study materials for people touched by cancer.  Through these emails, I also discovers that churches needed a tool to equip leaders to run their own cancer support group.  One of  my favorite parts of the book is the leaders guide which addresses specific issues which appear in cancer support groups.

God is Bigger Than Your Cancer Workbook is available online at http://www.godisbiggerthan.com/cancerworkbook/ and will be appearing in your favorite bookstore!  Check out the new pages to the website-new excerpts, and endorsements about the new book.  Thank you for all the prayers you have shared for this project.  May each book be used by God.
