BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK: God and Kings by Lynn Austin

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Do you know anything about the Old Testament man- King Hezekiah?  I didn’t either until I read God and Kings.  He was like a lot of people you know today-really messed up dad, lots of pressure at work to do the earthly thing instead of the godly thing and he never seems to be on the same page with his wife.  This is the first book in the Chronicles of the Kings series.  Good writing and I think pretty well grounded in scripture.  If you like historical fiction, you’ll like God and Kings by Lynn Austin.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

“If we only do what we are inclined to do, some of us would do nothing forever and ever.  There are unemployables in the spiritual domain, spiritually decrepit people, who refuse to do anything unless they are supernaturally inspired.  The proof that we are rightly related to God is that we do our best whether we are inspired or not.”

God is Bigger Than… Scary Movies

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I have to say I don’t understand some people’s attraction to scary movies.  You pay good money to have your heart rate climb, your palms sweat and your throat produce the most unflattering squeaks and squeals.   Even though you know it’s only a movie, you’re still scared.  I guess I don’t like feeling scared whether it’s real or not.

Being scared is just the anticipation that something bad is going to happen.  People typically go to great lengths to avoid feeling scared.  They walk on side walks, lock their doors and park under street lights.  All to avoid even the anticipation that something bad might happen.

The problem is that sometimes you can feel scared to be around people you love.   Your friend has cancer so you call them less.  Your Aunt looses her husband so you give her “space to grieve”.  Your neighbor lost their job so you don’t invite them to a cookout because they’re “going through a hard time”.  We’ve all done these things.   In your head, you know that people with difficulties need more contact with friends and family, not less.  But each time you think of reaching out to them, you get that uncomfortable scary feeling.

Are you afraid the cancer, grief or financial problems are contagious?  Maybe.  More likely, facing another person’s suffering makes you face some things you typically get to avoid.  Questions start to come into your mind like:

“If it can happen to them, can it happen to me?”

“What can I do?”

“Do people expect me to do something?”

Or even…

“Does God expect me to do something?”

These ar  scary questions.  Avoiding suffering so you don’t feel scared seems natural.  But God has other ideas.  Hebrews 13:3 tells us you should remember those that are struggling “as if you yourselves were suffering.”    But who wants to do that?  Who wants to remember people that are sick, grieving or unemployed as though you are suffering too?  After all, can you feel, I mean really feel , the suffering of another person as though you yourself are suffering and do nothing?  Probably not.

Maybe this is why it’s scary to be with people who are suffering.  Maybe we’re not scared their suffering is contagious.  Maybe it’s a fear the Holy Spirit will inspire us to get involved.    What if the Holy Spirit urges you to sit with them in their sadness, or listen to their pain?  What if the Holy Spirit urges you to open your home, your wallet, or your busy schedule to make a difference in someone’s suffering?  To honestly respond to suffering  requires sacrifice.  Yuck.  No wonder being around suffering is scary.

But God has a plan for you.  He wants you to feel another person’s suffering so deeply you can’t help but act.  And by acting, be blessed.   But first you have to let yourself connect with someone’s suffering.  Fear not.  God is with you.  Remember, your fear can’t be anything compared to their fear.   Just like scary movies, sometimes we feel scared whether it’s real or not.  Overcome your fears and bless someone in need.  It might change their life but it will most certainly change yours.

BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK: The Pawn by Steven James

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

If you like a thinking man’s mystery, this book’s for you.  The Pawn is like CSI on steroids.  FBI Criminologist Patrick Bowers hunts a serial killer but finds lots of twists and turns in his plot.  I love an author that can surprise me and James Stevens defiantely hit that mark.  The subtle faith messages comes from the lead character’s memories of his deceased wife.  I love that!  Even after her death her Christian witness lives on.  Oh, and this is the first in a series if you like it.

SONG OF THE WEEK: Who I am Hates Who I’ve Been by Reliant K

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Great song and a great band.  If you do not know Reliant K yet, you should take a listen.  A great crossover band with a heart felt message and penetrating lyrics.

“I’m sorry for the person I became.
I’m sorry that it took so long for me to change.
I’m ready to be sure I never become that way again
’cause who I am hates who I’ve been.”

The video really speaks the message beautifully too.  Enjoy!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

“The impulse to pursue God origionates with God, but the outworking of that impulse is our following hard after Him.  All the time we are pursuing Him we are already in His hand…”

God is Bigger Than…Your Borrowed Tupperware

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Although I rarely purchase Tupperware, my collection of those handy re-sealable containers continues to grow.  Granted, I may wash and “convert” an exhausted soft margarine tub – but too often, I borrow a friend’s nice Tupperware and I never give it back.  I don’t mean to be thoughtless, it just happens.  Once entering my home and being cleaned, the container sits on the kitchen counter to be returned- until the night I use it for my leftover spaghetti sauce.  Eventually, after a series of uses and washes, I can’t even remember who loaned it to me.  Unless somebody speaks up, it’s as good as mine.

“Mine.”  Isn’t that a lovely word?  “Whose car is that?”  “Mine.”  Who’s kid’s?”  “Mine.”  Whose home, job, pantry?”  “Mine, mine, mine.”  There is such security in knowing something is yours and yours alone.  Yet like my borrowed Tupperware, none of these things are really mine.  They’re just on loan.

See  your blessings are on loan from God.    Even though your name is on that paycheck and you worked hard for it, it’s still not yours.  It’s God’s.  James 1:17 says Every good and perfect gift is from above.  “Every good and perfect gift”.  That includes both the gifts you had nothing to do with like a soft sunset as well as the things you work hard for like the roof over your head.  All good things come from God.

I find this whole idea of my blessings being on loan from God a little frightening.  Why?  Because it’s so easy to take blessings for granted.  Like my friend’s Tupperware, over time, I begin to think of it as mine.  Looking at your blessings you might think “Look at all these incredible blessings in my life: my health, my loved one, my finances, my home.  These must have been given to me for my purpose.”  The truth is God has blessed you for His purpose.

It’s like God said to you “OK.  Tell you what.  I’m going to give you the food on your table, your health, your intelligence and even someone to love.  I want you to care for these blessings, multiply them and even enjoy them, but remember, they’re just loaners.  As I continue to complete my plan to save mankind, I may ask for some of them back.  But don’t worry because as you give them back to me, you’ll draw closer to me and that’s when the blessings really start!”

Matching you purpose to God’s purpose requires you to delight in the Lord.  The psalmist tells us to “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Think about that verse for a minute.  When the things that delight the Lord, also delight you, then you’ll receive the desires of your heart.  Why?  Because you will only desire the things God desires. Isn’t that cool?  When God’s desire is also your desire, His joy is your joy, and His purpose your purpose, you will find that you have all that you ever need.  Believe me, God has plans for every blessing He has loaned you.  Let Him be in charge of all you have, all you love and all you do because there is nothing as sweet as living for God’s purpose alone.

BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK:The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I bought The Life You’ve Always Wanted in 1997 when it was first released.  Thirteen years later, my copy is mutilated.  I have reread portions or all of this book so many times that more pages are covered with notes and underlines than are not.  Ortberg is such a humble author.  He teaches through helping us understand his own humaness.  This book was just what I needed to point my Christian walk to a deeper level.  Maybe it’s what you need too.
